My compositions are melodic. The melody is important to me in my compositions. So are the harmony and the rhythm, but the melody is usually the main thing. I start composing by creating a melodic motif. Then I choose the scale it will be in.

Then I compose the chord changes. In this stage it's not for how I am going to play them if at all, but for the general flow of the piece. The chord changes are based on the scale I chose.

Then I develop my motif according to the changes and the scale. The chords can change a little in specific points, and even the scale can change in some points, but generally, the original scale and changes are kept.

People say that you don’t start to compose a musical piece before you know what the last note will be. I tend to agree with them. It's like drawing a picture: You don't start in one corner, not knowing what the rest will look like. You plan ahead, make a sketch, draw the general lines and then add details in between.

Then I compose the accompaniment, based on the motif and the changes. The base line is usually another melody I compose, like a second voice. The chords could be played in sequences, but I usually try to break the sequences as much as I can. Sometimes I have two or even three voices in my composition.

When I repeat a phrase in my music, I usually change the instrument playing it. Sometimes I repeat the melody and change the accompaniment. I like playing with melodies, harmonies, rhythms and polyrhythm.
